One bright spot for the San Francisco 49ers this offseason is the release of their longest-tenured player. According to Over the Cap, the 49ers have freed up $18 million in 2024 salary cap space by cutting defensive tackle Arik Armstead after June 1.

San Francisco has $25.9 million in dead money from Armstead’s contract, which has been restructured many times.

This money will be distributed over the 2024 and 2025 NFL seasons. The 49ers will be slapped with a dead cap of $10.3 million this year and $15.6 million in 2025.

After being selected in the first round of the 2015 NFL Draft, Armstead, 30, played his entire nine-year NFL career with San Francisco.

In the off-season, he disrespectfully accepted the Jacksonville Jaguars’ final offer before being released and inked a three-year, $43 million deal with them.

The 49ers now have $25,245,331 in 2024 cap space thanks to Armstead’s release. This gives them the option to roll over a significant amount of their budget space into the 2025 season, when they will be subject to tighter restrictions, or extend contracts for important players like wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk.

Armstead was a prominent personality in the Bay Area both on and off the field during his tenure. He finished with the second-most postseason sacks in franchise history (eight), only behind Nick Bosa (10), and he continuously gave back to the Northern California community through his charitable endeavors.

Armstead gives the 49ers significant cap room as he begins a new chapter with the Jaguars. As the 2024 NFL season draws near, one of the main plot points will be how San Francisco decides to use this additional space.
