The fact that West was inducted into the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame in 1980 as a player was evidence of his early greatness and the beginning of my journey to comprehend his significance.
This was only the beginning, as his legendary position was further solidified when he was inducted in 2010 for his involvement on the 1960 U.S. Olympic Team.
Surprisingly, he was scheduled for a third induction this year, but as a contributor this time, emphasizing his lifetime commitment to the game.
In a heartfelt statement, the Los Angeles Clippers referred to West as “the personification of basketball excellence and a friend to all who knew him.” In his last moments, his wife Karen gave him consolation and encouragement.
The accomplishments of West’s playing career are astounding. Incredibly, he was selected for 12 All-NBA teams and made 14 All-Star games. One of his most memorable moments occurred in 1972, when he was essential to the Lakers’ championship drive.
West’s remarkable achievement of winning Finals MVP in 1969 despite playing for the losing team further cemented his fame.
There is no denying his status as one of the greatest basketball players of all time given his participation on the NBA’s 75th Anniversary Team.
West’s influence extended beyond the court. He assumed managerial responsibilities with ease and went on to manage eight NBA championship teams.
He oversaw the formation of the storied “Showtime” dynasty while serving as general manager of the Los Angeles Lakers. He was one of the most prosperous businessmen in basketball history thanks to his astute strategic thinking and good sense of talent.
West’s impact extended beyond the Lakers. He was a major asset to many teams, including as the Memphis Grizzlies, Los Angeles Clippers, and Golden State Warriors.
